There are many forms of meditation & movement that are designed to help us balance the forces of energy within us. And they all offer benefits. However, if you are like me and have spent much of your life repressing powerful emotions like anger, there comes a time when the body needs the impact of actually contacting something with force in order to free the pent up energies. This contact discharge serves a vital function in opening up the chi in the periphery nervous system allowing a greater & more natural flow as a result.
Ironically, the result is not to make one feel like they can dominate or subdue other people or beings. Instead the result is to liberate this energy to allow it to circulate freely throughout the body & create greater harmony in the Body+Mind+Spirit. Generally the need to dominate comes from insecurity and repressed energies. So finding a useful way to channel this force can improve self-confidence & allow greater ease and tolerance in our interactions with others.
So if any of you are women like me (or men) who come from a long ancestry of emotional repression, this is one way that you can begin to break the "freeze" response in the nervous system that can result from old trauma or conditioning. It is important to remember that the ability to release & utilize this force in an organized rather than chaotic way is crucial in mastering its power. So finding a class or teacher in martial arts is very helpful. But ask if they use targets in their practice rather than simply kicking and punching the air, because the contact can be a key to shifting the old patterns in your body.
Happy Transformation!
