Kundalini: Awakening the Body+Mind+Spirit

MindBodySpirit by LJAmlie
Everyone's path is very unique when they traverse through the amazing process of inner transformation. My experience is that we are turned to face our 'ego' & all of our conditioned beliefs & we often lock horns with this dualistic aspect of being human. It is the exploration of what is "right here" in each life rather than what is "out there". And this conscious inquiry begins to awaken that life Spirit within our bodies and our minds, unlocking every door that has ever been barred from our conscious awareness.
Whether you use the principles of the Law of Attraction to manifest material abundance, or seek happiness & contentment in your personal life, or wish to be of service in the world promoting healing, social justice or global sustainability, all these efforts will be trumped by the conflicts you still hold within you until you are finally willing to turn & face inward & address the conflicting beliefs you hold about yourself & the world. And your life will continue to provide the circumstances for you to see & work through these limitations until you recognize them as the powerful gifts of transformation that they are. Then the blossoming of this inner peace will seep through your mind and your body and into your surroundings in ways you could not have imagined & will be far more powerful than all of your previous efforts.
By Grace & surrender we may experience an opening where the polar opposites of good & bad begin to fade & we start accepting this fluid reality as a dance of freewill & divine prodding. Then, with greater awareness, we will see how the world mirrors back to us what we need regardless of whether it is painful or pleasurable. We begin to welcome all of it as a marvelous adventure.....and in that awareness lies our liberation.
What is Kundalini?
Kundalini is a sanskrit word that refers to the coiled energy at the base of the spine that can be awaken during the process of spiritual transformation. Historically in India people would engage in various rigorous practices in ashrams led by accomplished masters or "Gurus". Yet for me it is important to remember that Kundalini is just a word/concept that refers to the vital life-force energy that exists within all of us. Many cultures around the world have practices & teachings that refer to the awakening of this energy within both the body & the mind, yet in the western world we have become most familiar with this word & the languaging that accompanies it.
I will not get into the whole system of chakras & tantra & sexual awakening here, but suffice it to say there is much information available about it on the internet. What I will say is that I have worked with many people - especially middle aged women - who like myself, unexpectedly began to experience strange sensations of energy moving in their bodies, including a fiery burning around their sacrum or along their spine. In fact, we are now in a time of such accelerated transformation that many people are beginning to experience subtle or radical signs of this life-force energy activation without any prior training, exploration or safe container like an ashram or temple to house them.
My own experience of a sudden kundalini activation (I do not personally use the word kundalini awakening anymore because it may feel pleasant or difficult depending upon many variables) began with intense & unexpected panic & anxiety that seemed to come out of nowhere & for no specific reason. I speak more about my specific experience in The Deeper Remembering on another part of this website. But I can say that I was stumped to find anyone who had experienced this process & knew what to do when it was already underway & quite out of control. I could find Kundalini Yoga teachers who instructed people in awakening this energy, but not who assisted people who were right in the midst of the flames of transformation. And most of the time I had to screen yoga teachers & other practitioners to make sure my reactions wouldn’t freak them out.
And so I set upon my own journey of self-discovery to find out as much as I could about the physiological process of awakening. One of the most useful resources for me was the Biology of Kundalini by Jana Dixon, which is available both in print on demand paperback & on her website http://www.biologyofkundalini.com. It is a daunting compilation of information on the "science & protocol of spiritual alchemy" as she states, but if you are in the midst of very bazaar symptoms that western medicine can't usually make heads or tails of, it's worth checking out.
Yet over the last decade of my personal & professional exploration I have learned & benefited from numerous compassionate & skilled teachers, practitioners & healers who helped me find ways to open, clear & move this sacred energy through my bodymind vehicle. The process is not over by any means, but it has mellowed considerably over time. And it is what has motivated me to reach out to other people who may be experiencing what others would likely pathologize in their ignorance & misunderstanding. And for me the aspects of trauma & conditioning have been present in every person I have worked with who experience this kind of radical awakening. So my approach has grown to integrate various psychological, neurological, physiological & spiritual information & processes in order to work with this divine energy in a holistic manner. For I know that people no longer have the "luxury" to spend a decade of their life & all of their life's assets finding a way through this path of transformation.
