Internal Storms: Jaw Releases by Lynn "Jeanette" Amlie
Releasing the "Bottle-Neck"
Many people, especially women in my experience, have learned directly or indirectly over time to repress their words & emotions in their body. At some point in life it is not uncommon to begin to feel as if a great pressure has built up inside us that we do not know how to vent. We may have even tries screaming & shouting in an attempt to let it out & yet the pressure remains.
I have found this little exercise to be very useful in these situations. It was invented & shared with me by Lee Cartwright in Santa Fe, NM & it is deceptively effective despite it's simplicity.
For when we feel the building of an internal storm, it often signals the repression of an old truth that has not been given expression. Along with this comes tension patterns that may have been held in the jaw, neck, throat & shoulders for decades. This exercise addresses that held energetic pattern & can be used to help the body release some of the old tension along with the emotional charge that often accompanies it.
As always, the most important part of the exercise is pausing afterwards to notice the signs of discharge in the body. For it is here that the keys to our liberation lie. As we bring the mind down into the body & notice with the curiosity of a child what is happening, shifting & changing, so we "see & hear" that which wished to be expressed long ago. Then we can exercise our ability to vocalize these truths in whatever way feels most useful & we often find a new level of freedom in our body that we have not experienced before.
