Insomnia & Sleep: "Toe Tapping" Exercise by Lynn "Jeanette" Amlie
Switching on "Rest & Repair"Over the course of a lifetime it is not uncommon to experience times when we have difficulty sleeping. Yet we live in a culture where chronic insomnia has become nearly epidemic. Stimulants like coffee & soda in the morning & alcohol in the evening are common ways to force our nervous systems to function according to societal standards. Yet there often comes a time when these coping mechanisms no longer function very well & we are left searching for "stronger" interventions.
It is easy to see how a sudden traumatic incident like an accident or the death of a loved one can throw us so far off center that our normal patterns of sleeping are affected. However, most of us are unaware of how the accumulated tension from stress, early life traumas & repressive conditioning can also influence the ability of our nervous systems to switch into "Rest & Repair". This is the function of the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which also plays a dominant role in the health & functioning of our digestive system. When we are carrying a heavier load in our nervous systems from a build up of tension, it can often cause us to live in a heightened state of hyper-vigilance. This can be difficulty to just switch off when it becomes time to sleep. So when you find the mind racing & the body restless, this little exercise can help move the energy down & out of the lower body. It applies the principle of the saying "where the mind goes, energy flows". Although it does not replace the process of dealing with the original stress or trauma that caused the build up of tension in the first place, it can definitely help us get a decent night sleep & can be a beneficial aid to any kind of trauma resolution therapy including Neuro-Somatic Training. |
